SIFT: for Impactful and Sustainable Activism

WMSD developed the SIFT framework to help activists stay focused, avoid burnout, and create lasting impact where it matters most.

  • We’re in this together. We won’t always agree, and we won’t always get it right, but missteps and differences shouldn’t divide us. Trust each other’s good intentions and stay focused on our shared goal—protecting democracy and advancing justice. A united movement is a stronger movement.

  • The Trump administration thrives on chaos, using distractions and outrage to exhaust activists and derail progress. Not everything deserves your attention. Before reacting, ask yourself: Does this help me take action? If not, keep moving forward and stay focused on what truly matters.

    We cannot ignore disinformation - Because ignoring it allows lies to become reality.

  • Every cause and movement relies on a functioning democracy to thrive, and preserving democratic institutions must be our top priority. Democracy is at a breaking point. To stop Trump's authoritarian push, we must defend the judiciary, free press, and rule of law while fighting misinformation and corruption. The stakes couldn’t be higher.

  • Awareness isn’t enough—change happens when we act. 

Protect Our Democracy

Without a functioning democracy, no movement—civil rights, reproductive freedom, climate justice, or economic equality—can survive. Democracy is under attack.

Donald Trump and his administration are dismantling democratic institutions to consolidate power. Project 2025 lays out a plan to centralize executive power, replace nonpartisan civil servants with political loyalists, and dismantle oversight agencies, eliminating democratic safeguards. These are not policy shifts; they are calculated moves to seize long-term control. Protecting democracy is not about opposing bad governance—it is about stopping its collapse.

That is why supporting organizations that defend democracy is critical. Below is a list of organizations on the front lines. Every call, donation, volunteer shift, and vote matters.

  • Trump is stacking the courts with loyalists and bending the law in his favor. Without accountability, the justice system could become a tool for corruption instead of fairness.

    • Brennan Center for Justice | Works to protect judicial independence, voting rights, and democracy from partisan manipulation. Actively pushes back against Trump’s attempts to undermine the courts and legal system. | Website

    • Campaign Legal Center (CLC) | A legal watchdog challenging ethics violations, judicial misconduct, and partisan manipulation of the courts. Uses litigation and policy advocacy to hold corrupt actors accountable. | Website

    • National Democratic Redistricting Committee (NDRC) | Fights Trump-aligned gerrymandering and judicial appointments that threaten democracy. Ensures fair elections by opposing partisan-controlled courts that undermine voter rights. | Website

    • American Constitution Society (ACS) | Works to counteract Trump’s court stacking by advocating for fair judicial appointments, ethics reforms, and a legal system that serves democracy—not authoritarian power grabs. | Website

  • Trump is flooding the public with lies, attacking journalists, and making it harder to tell truth from propaganda. If we don’t push back right now, people will stop trusting real news—and without an informed public, democracy cannot survive.

    • Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) | Defends journalists from harassment and government retaliation. | Website

    • Poynter Institute | Provides journalism education and operates PolitiFact, a Pulitzer Prize-winning fact-checking site debunking political misinformation. | Website

    • Protect My Public Media | Advocates for federal funding of PBS, NPR, and local stations to ensure free, trusted journalism for all—especially in underserved communities. Without it, many lose access to fact-based news, education, and emergency information. | Website

  • Democracy only works if everyone has a fair chance to vote. Trump and his supporters have worked to make voting harder, spread lies about elections, and even tried to overturn results. We must push back against voter suppression and safeguard elections.

  • Donald Trump’s support among Latinos, young men, working-class voters, and segments of Black voters and white women grew due to economic concerns, cultural shifts, and targeted misinformation. Engaging these communities, countering disinformation, and expanding civic participation are essential. The organizations below mobilize key voters, increase turnout, and provide accurate election and policy information.

Protect Our Rights

Although protecting democracy has become our priority, our fight remains rooted in the values that first brought us together.

When Women’s March began, we united around core principles—civil rights, disability rights, immigrant rights, LGBTQIA+ rights, reproductive rights, workers' rights, environmental justice, and ending violence. These rights remain under attack, and we must continue fighting for them. The struggle for justice is not separate from the fight for democracy—it is the reason we fight.

  • Civil Rights include voting rights, freedom to worship without fear of intimidation or harassment, freedom of speech, and protections for all citizens regardless of race, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, or disability.

  • Disability rights break barriers to access, inclusion, independence, and the full enjoyment of citizenship at home and around the world. All humans deserve the right to be fully included in and contribute to all aspects of life, economy, and culture.

  • Worldwide, our environment and climate must be protected, and our natural resources must not endanger public health and safety or be exploited for corporate profit. Every individual and community has the right to clean water, clean air, and access to public lands.

  • Immigrant rights mean fair, humane, and equitable treatment of individuals seeking to enter or remain in the United States. This includes a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants, protections for DACA recipients and other vulnerable groups, and support for family reunification policies. Immigration rights are grounded in recognizing immigrants’ contributions to our nation’s economic and cultural vitality.

    • Border Angels | A San Diego-based nonprofit advocating for human rights, humane immigration reform, and social justice at the U.S.-Mexico border. Provides humanitarian aid, including water drops in the desert and educational programs. | Website | Donate | Volunteer

    • IMMIGRANT PROTECTION HANDBOOKS (available in English, Spanish, and Tagalog) Created for and with undocumented members of our community, this online (and downloadable) handbook provides essential resources for anyone at risk of detention or deportation, including emergency planning tools and legal aid contacts.

  • LGBTQIA+ rights ensure all individuals, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, have equal protection under the law and freedom from discrimination.

Self Care for Activists

Fighting for democracy and justice is hard work. Burnout, frustration, and exhaustion are real. The only way to sustain activism is to take care of yourself.

Ways to Stay Engaged Without Burning Out:

  • Set realistic goals – Doing something is better than doing everything.

  • Take breaks – Rest is part of the resistance.

  • Find support – Connect with like-minded activists for motivation and solidarity.

  • Celebrate progress – Victories, big and small, keep movements alive.
