Choice vs. Access: Defining Reproductive Justice from Planned Parenthood

Key Terms

Intersectionality: Coined by scholar and activist Kimberlé Crenshaw, intersectionality is the complex, cumulative way in which the effects of multiple forms of discrimination (such as racism, sexism, and classism) combine, overlap, or intersect especially in the experiences of marginalized individuals or groups.

Reproductive Health: According to the World Health Organization, reproductive health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity, in all matters relating to the reproductive system and to its functions and processes.

Reproductive health implies that people are able to have a satisfying and safe sex life and that they have the capability to reproduce and the freedom to decide if, when and how often to do so.

Reproductive Rights: Reproductive rights—having the ability to decide whether and when to have children—are important to women’s socioeconomic well-being and overall health. In recent years, policies affecting women’s reproductive rights in the United States have substantially changed at both the federal and state levels.

Reproductive Justice: Coined by a group of Black women in recognition that the Women’s Rights Movement, led by and representing white women, lacked a lens that could more equitably fight for the needs of Black, Indigenous, and women of color, and other marginalized people.

Reproductive justice looks at reproductive health and rights through a human rights and social justice framework. Reproductive justice equally fights for:

  • The right to have a child.

  • The right not to have a child.

  • The right to parent the children we have in safe and healthy conditions regardless of age, race, gender, sexual orientation, immigration status, ability, or economic condition.

  • The right to bodily autonomy.

Bodily Autonomy: Bodily autonomy is the right to make decisions over one's own life and future. It is about being empowered to make informed choices about one’s own reproductive health.

GIVE

We know that your time, talent, and treasure is limited. Here are a few ways to focus your giving, and involvement on reproductive healthcare, rights, and justice - issues that matter to you:

Think about your unique strengths - what can you do that might be helpful? For example…

Contribute financial support to organizations doing the work locally or focus your giving on aid to women in states with restrictive abortion access.
